“What would you want other bereaved siblings to know about grief and continuing your relationship with your sibling?”
I love it when people talk about her to me. I love talking about her and I don't like sitting there crying about her.
I like remembering how naughty she could be, how funny she could be and bringing her to life in all her glorious ways.
There isn't a shortcut through grief. There isn't a perfect way to do it. Be gentle with yourself. Let people help. Talk about them. Say their name. Laugh when something reminds you of them. Cry when you need to.
“What was your relationship like with your sister, Julia, and how has that relationship continued after her death?”
When Julia was ill, I used to say it was the worst of times, but also it was the best of times, because suddenly there was this intensity of meaning to life and everything we did, every small thing just seemed so, so important and we just loved the ordinary things like spending time together.
I think now when I'm saying this, I'm thinking, oh God, it's ended now because Julia died four years ago. But I think in a way, the friendship we had and all the times we shared and all the things we did together and all the influence she had on me and I had on her, that's still with me, that's still in my life and still part of who I am.
And that relationship, your relationship with your sibling doesn't end because they've died. It changes. The love stays.
