Soon October 2018 rolled around - I’d come home from work one day and my Mum mentioned that Steve hadn’t felt well that day. As I reached his bedroom door and put my hand on the door handle I knew something was wrong. Steve had suffered a mid-line shift and massive bleed to his brain - again he was rushed to hospital where he remained until his death at the end of October 2018. We just wanted to see him as much as possible and take all his pain away, but we felt so helpless and just wondered how we’d ended up there. In the months leading up to his death and several months after, the same questions swirled in my head, like why didn’t I see before how much he was struggling? Why didn’t I ask him how he was sooner? But also why didn’t he tell us sooner? Getting the news from my parents and rushing home to see them that evening and just hugging them so tight, not knowing what to say because it didn’t (and sometimes still doesn’t) feel real. I felt sick to my stomach and such a raw pain in my chest. It was almost surreal - I’d been thinking about Cameron so much that year and almost trying to prepare myself for the worst, but when the news came it was still a massive and horrifying shock. It didn’t feel real for ages and I felt very numb a lot of the time. I felt like such a horrible sister that sometimes I didn’t feel sad about it and instead I felt nothing at all. I couldn’t figure out how I’d gone from crying non-stop, to not crying at all at the flick of a switch and I felt guilty that I wasn’t grieving ‘properly’. Cameron was such a larger-than-life character; he was very charismatic, intelligent, funny and popular. Growing up I always admired him for having all these amazing qualities that I didn’t think I really had, so for a while I felt like the ‘better’ sibling had died. I knew this wasn’t rational and I reminded myself that Cameron would never want me to feel that way, but the feelings were hard to shake. Learning about “survivor’s guilt” helped me understand this was a common grief experience. I found comfort in thinking of this as a reflection of my love and connection to my brother, rather than a reality. I think sibling grief can be forgotten and I noticed people might ask me how my parents were doing and then overlook asking about me directly. Those moments are the hardest because it feels like an emotional attack, completely out of the blue and feels so overwhelming. I’ve found you’ve just got to let yourself feel what you’re feeling and try to block out any feelings of guilt around that. At times I felt angry at the world and how unfair it was that my brother was gone. Music was a big part of Cameron’s life and I listen to songs that I know he liked and ones that we used to dance to as kids together in the kitchen. Sometimes I play music on the piano that I remember him playing. I like talking about Cameron with my parents and I also have one of his jackets that he liked and I wear often – it’s one I think might have been quite expensive for him at the time, but he’d just started earning his own money from a part-time job and I remember he was excited to buy something nice for himself. It was very sudden; she was in hospital for a few days before her life support was stopped. It was so scary for me to see. I was only 12 at the time, and seeing my little sister in intensive care was beyond awful. The worst part was no one knew it would happen. In the first few days after she died I felt like I had to step up and become the adult in the house, my parents were devastated. I helped plan a lot of the funeral and make most of the decisions about the service, I felt I needed to do it so my parents didn’t have to worry. After the funeral, I just felt numb. My grief journey has been full of up and downs, as everyone knows, it’s never an easy journey. This past year, I’ve become someone I really admire, thanks to all the work I’ve put in. I’ve found a way to stay connected to my sister by sharing the amazing memories we had with others. He loved fishing, gaming, mountain biking, Japanese culture, and listening to music- things that brought him joy in his own quiet way. Jack and I were close in age, just 19 months apart, which meant we grew up like playmates. We were constant companions, always getting up to mischief together. One Christmas, I climbed onto the kitchen worktop to fetch our advent calendars. It was as though my world had stopped turning, but life around me continued. I was stuck somewhere between losing a sibling and losing a part of myself. At the time, I was in my final year at university, with assignments and exams scheduled just two weeks after Jack’s accident. If I didn’t complete them, I risked having to stay behind a year. Surprisingly, focusing on my assignments allowed me a temporary escape from the trauma whilst I quietly processed my loss. It was a sense of normality in a time of chaos. As the days passed, I found myself unsure of where I fit in my grief. My parents, who had always been the ones I’d turned to for support, were now the ones who needed it most. I felt an overwhelming sense that I had to be strong for them.
